Mama Sarah, the (step) grandmother of President Obama has praised the work of ACE Africa in her community of K'ogelo, Siaya, and has committed her support through the donation of her land which is now used as an ACE Africa demonstration garden, maintained by Nyangoma K'ogelo Women's Group, of which she is patron.

Siaya District, where ACE Africa has been working for several years, is a remote rural area with some of the highest numbers of orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya. There are over 20,000 orphans in the ACE Africa project areas alone and over 10% of school-attending children are known to be HIV+. Mama Sarah is highly respected in her local community and donates much of her time to supporting children who are affected by HIV and AIDS as well as local community support groups, who are mainly made up of widows and People Living with HIV and AIDS.

ACE Africa identifies and empowers groups like the Nyangoma K'ogelo Women's Group through providing training in organic agricultural techniques and micro business skills. They provide fresh vegetables from their kitchen gardens to orphans and vulnerable children and sell surplus produce to increase their income so that they can also support their families and orphans with essential household items such as clothing, school equipment and basic medication.

We look forward to extending our work with Mama Sarah and the Nyangoma K'ogelo Women's Group in the future and are grateful for her continued support.

"I am overwhelmed with joy at the work ACE Africa is doing within my community. Not only are local people learning important skills that will change their lives; but ACE Africa is also providing an opportunity for people all over the world to learn how local communities benefit from the support of effective projects."Mama Sarah Obama, K'ogelo, Siaya District October 16th 2009
