Facts about Kimnyaki & Mateves:
- The majority of the population is Maasai, i.e. semi-nomadic
- Cultural practices e.g. polygamy, witchcraft, wife & land inheritance are common
- The rights of the child are mainly unknown
- Stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS is high
- Many people do not have access to basic medical needs
- Misconceptions and lack of education on HIV/AIDS in community & schools
- The main sources of income are from farming and small businesses
- Few Support groups & systems to cope with increasing numbers of Orphans and Vulnerable Children
- Poverty is widespread and can be identified as one of the main reasons HIV prevalence rates are high
- Knowledge on the benefits of nutrition and HIV management is minimal over 75% do not have access to a kitchen garden
