Community Gardens
Individual Household Gardens
The health of children is highly dependent on their diet; in an area where community members grow and sustain themselves on a diet of maize, kale and beans, knowledge and practice of good nutrition is lacking. ACE trains households in Agriculture and Nutrition to enable them to grow a variety of nutritious indigenous and exotic food crops using organic methods.
Demonstration Gardens
In all project areas, ACE has set up community demonstration gardens managed and run by an appointed community gardener. In this garden, a variety of crops and techniques are demonstrated for community members to come and learn from. In addition, food from the garden is regularly distributed to PLWA and OVC whose food situation at home is vulnerable. Community members are also able to collect seeds, both indigenous and exotic for their own household kitchen gardens.
School Gardens
Through the Child to Child (CtC) programme in primary schools, ACE's fun and interactive training programme equips club members with important farming skills and nutritional knowledge. In an area where life skills and such knowledge disappear with the death of family members due to HIV/AIDS, this training is essential. The CtC clubs in turn set up school gardens and have started school feeding programmes, produce being distributed to needy OVC.
