Gladys
Gladys Naswa is a 34-year old widow. Her husband died in 2003 ago and she was sent away by her brothers in law who accused her of "bringing the disease that killed their brother."
With great shame, she returned to her parents home with her four children, where she learned that both her parents had died, her two brothers had dropped out of school and there was no money and no food.
Gladys started to experience frequent illness and went to the ACE resource centre where she was counselled and over time tested and found to be HIV+. She was referred to an ACE support group and started receiving nutritional supplements to boost her health, and in time regained her strength.
ACE trained Gladys in business management skills and provided her with a start up loan for her cereals business. Gladys says that her living standards have improved considerably.
She is now supporting 13 children within her household, eight of them are her nephews, four of them are her own children and one is her younger brother.
