Jemima Mumalasi
Jemima was orphaned at the age of 18 months.
She has never had a home, always being shunted around from relation to relation.
An ACE Child Rights Committee member found Jemima living with an uncle, an aunt and nine cousins in a one roomed mud hut. She did not go to school, was abused and used as a slave, only getting food if there was anything left over after everyone had eaten.
Her case was referred to a support group and an ACE counsellor. Jemima was placed in foster care and is now attending a knitting course and will soon be ready to go back to school. For the first time in her life, she has the security of a home, food, clothes and is part of a family.
