People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWA)
In remote rural areas of profound poverty, PLWA are often removed from basic welfare facilities such as access to medical care, nutritional information, basic medication or Anti Retroviral Treatment (ART).
Cultural practices such as wife inheritance and polygamy compound already vulnerable situations resulting in the rights of women and children being neglected. The stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS often leads to neglect by the community and a fear of being open about their HIV status. They are often left to suffer on their own, with little or no medication or food, their children their only comfort and support.
