Charles case study

Siaya County, Kenya

Charles was appointed as an Ace area activator in Siaya County in 2007. Due to his phenomenal passion and involvement in health promotion services he has become a much-loved figure amongst the community and is popularly known as “daktari” (“doctor” in Swahili). During home visits, Charles gives hope to many bedridden individuals living with HIV and AIDS by providing regular psycho-social support. He currently is able to monitor 5 clients a day and works alongside 10 other community healthworkers in the area. In addition,

Charles is an active participant in jigger’s eradication and treatment campaigns to ensure children can walk again and participate fully at school. Charles has received further training in child rights protection which has enabled him to play an instrumental role in identifying victims of child abuse. He ensures those who have been harmed receive the vital support they need to cope with the neglect and cruelty they have endured.

Charles has become a role model within the community and his determination to improve the health and well-being of Siaya County has made him an invaluable member of the Ace team.
