ACE AFRICA INSTITUTIONAL AND INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH PARTNERS 2010:

1. The Department of Public Health, Duke University, USA
Positive Outcomes For Orphans (POFO) 2005 – 2010

A 5 year, cross cultural research project in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Cambodia and India. The study aims to identify characteristics of care for orphans that are associated with better child outcomes and compare the short and long term impacts of community and institutional care. ACE has been identified as the Kenyan NGO partner in community care and support for orphans and vulnerable children. Approximately 500 households are interviewed every six months to assess the health, physical, psychosocial & nutritional status of children and their carers. Basic household needs & counselling are provided regularly to vulnerable households. This five year study will be completed in December 2010. The first of 4 publications of the findings of the research were released on December 18th, 2009.

Positive Outcomes For Orphans (POFO) January 2011 – December 2015

A new 5 years follow up research project to study the progressive changes in the lives of the 550 children and their caregivers currently participating in study. The study on ‘Effects of household support on Educational outcomes of orphaned and vulnerable children’ will evaluate the effectiveness of household support in improving educational outcomes of OVC, effects of OVC support programs and how to increase effectiveness.

A pilot study of household use of traditional medicine in ACE Africa Siaya project sites. The study considers traditional medicine in relation to HIV and AIDS treatment and; national policies, global expenditure, service provision, integration, access to health choices in resource poor settings and quality. In addition, the study considers the role of ACE Africa Community Livelihoods Initiative in service delivery and stigma reduction.

1. Community Livelihood Initiatives (CLI) - Building sustainable community livelihoods in nutritious food production and related income generation

  • Community Monitoring and Evaluation Capacity
    An assessment of the effectiveness of the CLI component in terms of group empowerment, ability to sustain activities and monitoring and evaluation capacity.
  • Changes in economic and food security at the household level
    An assessment of changes in community, household and individual economic and food security in Bungoma and Siaya project areas since 2004.
  • Nutrition and the Management of HIV and AIDS
    An assessment of the Agriculture and Nutrition programme, specifically considering nutrition and the provision of nutritional supplements in the management of HIV and AIDS in rural, poor areas.

2. Child Rights and Welfare (CRW) - Building community structures and ability to protect the health, rights and welfare of PLWA and children affected/infected by HIV and AIDS through Child to Child HIV and AIDS health education, school guidance and life skills and the provision of direct aid addressing the welfare of children

  • Changes in ability to identify and protect children’s rights
    A comparative study on prevalence and community management of child abuse in ACE Africa areas of intervention and no intervention.

3. Counselling and Wellbeing Services - focussing on Prevention, Care and Treatment - providing outreach counselling for PLWA, Guardians and children, counselling and testing, referrals and the provision of nutritional supplements and medication

  • Reducing stigma
    Using the IPPF Stigma Index and the Quality of Life Index - A study involving People Living with HIV and AIDS on their perceptions of change in the stigma and discrimination that is associated with HIV and AIDS.
  • Case Studies and Testimonies
    From children, People Living with HIV and AIDS, Guardians.

4. Child Status Index - Development of CSI and ACE Africa internal monitoring and evaluation system
