11 June 2015Migori County Primary School Athletics Championship

On Thursday 4th June, Uriri High School held the Migori County Primary School Athletics Championship. The event was a huge success attracting over 1,500 people from all the different sub counties* within Migori County and even further afield. Ace Africa representatives Pire (Ace Project Manager, Siaya) and Board member Peter Orengo were there to represent Ace on the day.

The Athletics provided a brilliant opportunity to create awareness in the community as well as discover and nurture talents of the young boys and girls who were participating. Past successes, such as the Athletics Day in Got Matar last year, have demonstrated how effective and fun organised sporting activities can be in engaging people from all ages in rural communities.

The variety of races on display demonstrated the children’s enthusiasm and skill and included:

  • 100m boys and girls
  • 200m boys and girls
  • 400m boys and girls
  • 800m boys and girls
  • 1,500m boys and girls
  • 5000m girls final
  • 5000m boys
  • 10,000m walk race for boys and 500m for girls
  • 10,000m boys
  • 4×100 boys and girls relay

Many of the participants enjoyed the day so much they are now thinking of participating in Ace Africa’s forth-coming JBSF fun run at Got Matar in November this year!

Ace Africa were delighted to sponsor the event and produced 2000 certificates that were awarded to all the winning teams. Ace also donated 30 footballs, made by Alive & Kicking, which had illustrations with HIV prevention messages; all to be distributed within the county.

Ace Africa was fortunate to have extra support on the day from people who helped make the event such a success:

  • The journalist who captured all the sporting moments
  • Sub county Directors of Education
  • Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) representatives
  • Head Teachers from across the county
  • Parents
  • KEPESHA representatives

Once again, a big thank you to all those who participated and attended and we look forward to hosting similar successful events.
