This year more than 1,250 community members registered and teams form 25 primary schools raced alongside other clubs and camp athletics teams. Runners of all ages and fitness levels tightened their shoelaces and gave their all during one of the 14 different races which took place on the day. A huge well done to the fastest male runner, Joseph Okelo, who completed the 10km race in a brilliant 31.19 and to the fastest female, Miruan Tanui, who crossed the finish line in 59.16. Many more participants revealed their talents and inspirational energy during the races which were particularly testing in the heat of the Kenya sun!

It would seem that sporting events, such as the Got Matar Run, have the potential to unite communities, giving individuals a sense of pride and sense of place. It is also a fantastic and ingenious way to reach more members of the community with critical health and social by co-locating the two activities.

Ace Africa, in collaboration with other community actors, provided community members of Siaya with a variety of services including HIV counselling and testing, other health check-ups, legal aid services, sexual and reproductive rights’ training, amongst other critical assistance. In addition, various community-based organisations and NGOs’ provided commodities such as exercise books and school bags and sanitary towels for school children, blankets, mattresses, solar lights and farm irrigation pumps for households.

The theme of this year’s run was ‘Race and Test’ and had a particularly focus on increasing the rate of HIV testing and number of people that are aware of their status in Siaya. The Ace Africa team work tirelessly, with the support of Athletics Kenya and other partners every year to ensure that this event is coordinated effectively and that critical health services are delivered. In addition, the event would not have been possible without the support of Jane Bubear Sports Foundation who provide important funding for the event. A proud day for all involved!
